Experts agree that Employee Recognition is just at it's infancy but at least Recognition Budgets are increasing. Click here to read more. Business professionals are clammering for the perfect fix. There is no one solution. Recognition is a multi tiered initiative. A recognition program must align recognition with the corporate mission and values.
The easiest place to get started is with a Long Service Award Program. Traditional service programs began at 5 years and continued to recognize every 5 successive years of service. The only problem with the 5 year milestone is that the Gen Y employees can get missed. The Gen Y employee will leave in 1.5 years or possibly make it to a maximum of 4.1 years before seeking a new challenge. Effective recognition has to take this into account and include a recognition strategy to recognize this needed talent.
Progressive organizations include Performance Awards as well as recognizing the employee tenure much sooner starting at 6 months, 1 year, 3 years and adding a 7 year level. Many include a welcome gift and program kick off party.
Performance Recognition tends to be the next area employers want to recognize. Employees are always asked to give a little extra and now they can be recognized for that effort. Programs have catchy names such as Bravo and can have multiple levels of achievement with catchy names like Applause!, Applaud! and Acclaim!
Criteria should be based on corporate values and beliefs to create categories that the extra effort can easily be mapped to. Gift value can be proportionate to the expended effort creating a fair program throughout the organization.
